Giovanni Merritt isn’t your average artist. Known as G-EPIC in the music world and Coach Gio to his chess students, he’s carved a unique path that seamlessly blends the raw energy of hip-hop with the strategic depth of chess.
Hailing from Miami, Florida, Giovanni’s love for rap ignited at a young age. By 8, he was crafting rhymes, and his middle school years were filled with the rhythmic pulse of beatboxing. Heavily influenced by hip-hop legends like Biggie, Tupac, Jay-Z, and Outkast, he formed his own rap group, YBR (Young but Ruthless). While music was a constant companion, it wasn’t until after high school that Giovanni truly decided to pursue it as a career.
Fueled by the unwavering support of his family and armed with a home studio, Giovanni made a bold move in 2014. He left college behind and set his sights on the vibrant music scene of NYC. There, he connected with the talented producer E-Grillz, and together they crafted a sound that reflects the complexities of life. This collaborative effort culminated in his highly anticipated project, EPIC LIFE.
But Giovanni’s passions extend far beyond the realm of music. Since the age of 6, he’s harbored a deep love for chess. He believes the game is more than just a competition; it’s a training ground for the mind, sharpening cognitive abilities, strategic thinking, and emotional resilience. Coach Gio, as he’s known to his students, has dedicated the past 7 years to sharing this passion. From private lessons to leading school programs and special events, he’s instilled these values in countless students.
His dedication has yielded impressive results. Teaming up with National Master Jerald Times at the Rosalyn Yalow Charter School in the Bronx, Coach Gio has guided his students to victory in numerous tournaments, including the prestigious GNSYCC and NY State Scholastic Championships.
In 2020, amidst the global challenges of the pandemic, Giovanni launched EPIC MOVE MAKERS. This urban/hip-hop chess platform embodies his dual identity as G-EPIC and Coach Gio. It’s a testament to his unwavering commitment to merging his artistic and educational endeavors, proving that success can be achieved in both the creative and intellectual spheres.
